As a city that has been a center of Dutch government in Central Java, it is obvious that Semarang has many Dutch inheritances that realized on exotic and glorious old buildings. Many Dutch soldiers and staffs who lived in Semarang finally inspired Liem Gien Nio to establish cake shop that sold special European cakes with her husband's last name "Oen" in 1936. A shop that previously sold cakes eventually started to be completed with ice cream and various special Dutch dishes. Toko Oen, then, became famous among Dutch people who lived in Semarang at that time. After the independence of Indonesia, Toko Oen was still exist with its special menus that were cooked with recipes from generation to generation.
Being curious with the legendary Toko Oen's story, YogYES gave theirselves some time to visit the store located on a side of Jalan Pemuda, Semarang. Located on the corner of intersection, Toko Oen building that still keeps its original form seemed narrow and narrower. However, right as entering the shop, wide, clean, and comfortable rooms appeared. Fragrant smell burst from smalls jars containing cookies piled neatly on the table in the corner of the room. An old grand piano with a flower vase on the top welcomed whoever is coming. Glass ornaments, hanging lamp, and classical furniture brought nostalgic memories to the past. Especially when hearing a group of grandmas and grandpas sang memory songs from the next room that is transparent.
While enjoying the past atmosphere, YogYES was ordering Bistik Hamburg (Hamburg Steak) that was a special menu of this restaurant. The delicious steak cooked with a special recipe was made of ground beef, then grilled. Various vegetables such as peas, carrot, cauliflowers, green beans, lettuce, tomato, and egg completed this steak. Not to be forgotten, thick steak gravy. For those who love spicy taste, they could add provided chilly sauce. Beside special Dutch dishes, Toko Oen also provided Javanese and Chinese food to adapt with the era condition and local tongue. One of favourite Javanese Chinese food was Nasi Goreng Special Ham.
As dessert, do not forget to order ice cream, because Toko Oen is famous with its delicious ice cream. There are various kinds of ice cream that can be chosen, however, from all of the ice cream, visitor's most favourite ice cream are Tuty Fruty Ice Cream and Oen's Symphony. Tuty Fruty Ice Cream is shaped like a quater soft chocolate ball filled with dried fruit and rough-shredded ice. While Oen's Symphony consists of 4 scoopes ice cream with various flavors, then, added toping and cat tongue biscuits (meringue) special from Toko Oen.
