If we talk about lumpia, automatically our memory will go to Semarang because it is a specialty of Semarang. However, lumpia is actually not originally from Semarang. It is a traditional food from China, which is a mixture of bamboo shoot, egg, fresh vegetable, meat, and sea food that is later wrapped in pastry. Lumpia started to be famous when many Chinese people stayed permanently in Semarang. It underwent some processes and changes so that it becomes lumpia like we know today, which is based on Javanese people’s favorite taste.

The development of lumpia cannot be solely seen from Chinese food, but it was because of a Chinese-Javanese couple named Tjoa Thay Yoe and Wasih, who first sold lumpia with his and her own style. However, after getting married, Yoe’s Hokkian lumpia recipe was combined with Wasih’s Javanese recipe, so that they could create fusion style lumpia with delicious taste. This recipe was later taught to their children and began to spread in Semarang.

Lumpia Gang Lombok that is located right beside Tay Kak Sie Chinese temple is the oldest Yoe’s lumpia restaurant in Semarang. The small restaurant and uncomfortable location are not reasons for the visitors to eat there. The customers of this restaurant are not only from the people who pray in the temple, but also those from Semarang or other city. When we arrived in this restaurant, we need to sit closely to other visitors since it was crowded. We didn’t need to wait long to have this food. A fried lumpia with cucumber pickle, brownish sauce, lettuce, chili, and lokio is served on the table.

The big portion of lumpia containing bamboo shoot and shrimp has been cut into four pieces so that it would be easy to eat. When you eat the lumpia with the sauce and the pickle, you will taste great sensation in your mouth. If you like spicy food, you may have the chili or lokio too. The combination of those food in your mouth will give you wonderful experience that you couldn’t find in any other palces. One more thing, though the owner of the restaurant is Chinese, you don’t need to worry about the kosher guarantee.
